Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
