The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
