Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
