Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
