The Mountain (Al-Toor)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 and by the Scripture penned 2 in an exposed parchment 3 By the House Frequented. 4 By the roof elevated. 5 And the sea set aflame. 6 The punishment of your Lord is certain to come. 7 There is none who could avert it. 8 The day the sky will tremble, 9 And the mountains will move away with an awful movement. 10 Then woe that Day to those that treat (Truth) as Falsehood;- 11 Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves. 12 The Day they are thrust toward the fire of Hell with a [violent] thrust, [its angels will say], 13 “This is the Hell which you used to give the lie to.” 14 What, is this magic, or is it you that do not see? 15 Taste you therein its heat, and whether you are patient of it or impatient of it, it is all the same. You are only being requited for what you used to do. 16 The pious will live in bountiful Paradise, 17 talking of what they have received from their Lord and of how their Lord has saved them from the torment of hell. 18 "Eat and drink with good cheer as a reward for your good deeds," 19 They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris (female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes. 20 And those who believe and whose offspring follow them in Faith, to them shall We join their offspring, and We shall not decrease the reward of their deeds in anything. Every person is a pledge for that which he has earned. 21 We shall provide them in abundance with all kinds of fruit and meat, whatever they may desire. 22 while they pass therein a cup one to another wherein is no idle talk, no cause of sin, 23 ۞ Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them, young male servants (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded. 24 They advance one upon another, asking each other questions. 25 Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious; 26 "But Allah has been good to us, and has delivered us from the Penalty of the Scorching Wind. 27 Verily we were wont to pray unto Him aforetime; verily He! it is He, the Benign, the Merciful. 28
