Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
