These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
