He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to a rich man, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
