Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
