Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
