The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the setting star, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
