He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 You pay full attention, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And whereas he fears, 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 Olives and dates, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
