And We divinely inspired Moosa that, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night and strike a dry path in the sea for them, you shall have no fear of Firaun getting to you, nor any danger.” 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his hosts, but they were fully overwhelmed by the sea. 78 because Pharaoh had led his people astray and had not guided [them] aright. 79 O children of Israel! [Thus] We saved you from your enemy, and [then] We made a covenant with you on the right-hand slope of Mount Sinai, and repeatedly sent down manna and quails unto you, [saying,] 80 Eat of the good things We have given you for sustenance, and be not inordinate with respect to them, lest My wrath should be due to you, and to whomsoever My wrath is due be shall perish indeed. 81 Yet I am gracious to him who repents and believes, and does the right, and follows the straight path. 82 ۞ 'Moses, why have you come with such haste from your nation' 83 He replied: "Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee." 84 Said He, 'We have tempted thy people since thou didst leave them. The Samaritan has misled them into error.' 85 Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: "O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer's condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" 86 They replied, "We did not go against our promise with you out of our own accord. We were forced to carry people's ornaments. We threw them away and so did the Samiri. 87 "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
