Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
