Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
