Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
