۞ [The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship 22 "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire! 23 And stop them, for they shall be questioned: 24 "How is it that [now] you cannot succour one another?" 25 But they, that Day, are in surrender. 26 And some of them will confront the others, 27 They said, “It is you who used to come to us from our right, in order to sway.” 28 They will answer, “You yourselves did not have faith!” 29 We had no power over you. You were a rebellious people, 30 But now our Lord's word has come true against us: truly, we are bound to taste [the punishment]. 31 "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray." 32 So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment. 33 Thus do We treat the culprits. 34 For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride, 35 And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" 36 In fact he has brought the Truth, and testified for the Noble Messengers! 37 Behold, you will indeed taste grievous suffering [in the life to come,] 38 “And you will not be compensated except for your deeds.” 39 Except the chosen creatures of God, 40 For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise). 41 Fruits; and they shall be honoured, 42 in the Gardens of Bliss. 43 (Sitting) on couches, face to face, 44 A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them, 45 clear, delightful to those who drink it: 46 Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom. 47 And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty). 48 [as free of faults] as if they were hidden [ostrich] eggs. 49 Then they will advance unto each other, mutually questioning. 50 One of them speaks thus: "Behold, I had [on earth] a close companion 51 who was wont to ask [me,] 'Why - art thou really one of those who believe it to be true 52 (Do you think) we would be paid back our due when we are dead and reduced to dust and bones?' 53 Allah will say: will ye look down? 54 Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell. 55 He says, 'By God, wellnigh thou didst destroy me; 56 But for Allah's favour, I should be one of those who have been mustered here. 57 (Allah informs about that true believer that he said): "Are we then not to die (any more)? 58 “Except our earlier death, and nor will we be punished?” 59 Lo! this is the supreme triumph. 60 For the like of this then let the workers work. 61 Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum (a horrible tree in Hell)? 62 Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.). 63 (Zaqqum) is a tree which grows from the deepest part of hell, 64 The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils: 65 And verily they must eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith. 66 And behold, above all this they will be confounded with burning despair! 67 And once again: Verily, the blazing fire is their ultimate goal 68 Indeed they found their fathers astray. 69 So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps. 70 Before them a multitude of people of olden times had erred, 71 But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;- 72 See how terrible was the end of those who were warned. 73 But not the chosen servants of Allah. 74
