Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
