The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And your clothing purify 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
