The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
