The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and his morning brightness 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
