Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
