Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
