The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
