[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
