The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
