The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
