Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 into My Paradise. 30
