The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35

Notes and Instructions
Reading the Quran translated into English, or any other language, is more like reading books of interpretation than reading literal translations.
When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
