The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. 1 The Romans are vanquished, 2 In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer 3 Within ten years - Allah's is the command in the former case and in the latter - and in that day believers will rejoice 4 In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 5 [This is] God's promise. Never does God fail to fulfil His promise -- but most people do not know this; 6 they only know the outward appearance of the life of this world, and they are neglectful of the Hereafter. 7 Have they not thought that God has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them but for a genuine purpose to exist for an appointed term? Many people do not believe in their meeting with their Lord. 8 Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these (pagans) have done, and there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs. Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves. 9 The end of the evil-doers was terrible, for they had rejected the revelations of God and mocked them. 10
