We sent a revelation to Moses saying, "Take away My servants by night and strike for them a dry path through the sea. Have no fear of being overtaken and do not be afraid." 77 Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the waters completely overwhelmed them and covered them up. 78 And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them]. 79 O children of Israel! [Thus] We saved you from your enemy, and [then] We made a covenant with you on the right-hand slope of Mount Sinai, and repeatedly sent down manna and quails unto you, [saying,] 80 I allowed you to consume the pure sustenance which We had given you but not to become rebels, lest you become subject to My wrath. Whoever becomes subject to My wrath will certainly be destroyed. 81 "But, without doubt, I am (also) He that forgives again and again, to those who repent, believe, and do right, who,- in fine, are ready to receive true guidance." 82 ۞ What made you hurry away, O Moses, from your people?" 83 He said: "They are right behind me. I have hastened to You, O Lord, so that You may be pleased." 84 The Lord said, "We tested your people after you left them and the Samiri made them go astray." 85 So Moses returned to his people full of anger and regret. "O my people," he said, "did not your Lord make you a better promise? Did the time of covenant seem too long to you? Or did you wish the wrath of your Lord to fall upon you that you broke the promise you had made to me?" 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise to thee of our own free will, but [this is what happened:] we were loaded with the [sinful] burdens of the [Egyptian] people's ornaments, and so we threw them [into the fire,] and likewise did this Samaritan cast [his into it]." 87 and brought out of there (from the molten gold) the effigy of a calf that lowed." The people cried out: "This is your deity and the deity of Moses, whom Moses has forgotten." 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
