The Stars (Al-Najm)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the setting star, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 So (know that) Allah only is the Owner of all – the Hereafter and this world. 25
