The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 arise and give warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It scorches people's skin 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
