The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
