a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
