Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
