The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And pollution shun. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked around, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 scorching the flesh; 29 over it are nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
