The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made things easy for them. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
