He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 To him you give attention. 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and in awe of God 9 You neglect. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And We made corn grow, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
