The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
