The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it sets: 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
