A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
