Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf. Ha. Ya. Ain. Sad. 1 A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah. 2 When he quietly called his Lord 3 and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. 4 "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,- 5 Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable! 6 “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) – before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” 7 He said, 'O my Lord, how shall I have a son, seeing my wife is barren, and I have attained to the declining of old age?' 8 He said, "It will be so! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.'" 9 [Zachariah] prayed: "O my Sustainer! Appoint a sign for me!" Said [the angel]: "Thy sign shall be that for full three nights [and days] thou wilt not speak unto men". 10 So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. 11 (And it was said unto his son): O John! Hold fast the Scripture. And we gave him wisdom when a child, 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 kind to his parents, not arrogant or a rebellious person. 14 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' 15
