A multitude of those of old 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
