The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 except those that pray, 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
