And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 But when We had relieved them of their punishment they broke their promise. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
