The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
