The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 except those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
