The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
