The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
